 FAQ

How long do sessions usually take?

Family sessions last about an hour to an hour and fifteen minutes. With really young kids, it’s not always possible to push it this long but part of the magic of family sessions involves me chasing around your little ones and capturing them exactly as they are in this stage of their life. Of course we will do our absolute best to get some beautiful frameable photos with everyone looking and smiling, but you can bet that about half your session is composed of me letting natural moments unfold with very little to no direction.

Personal brand sessions will range anywhere between two to six hours, depending on your business’ needs for photos and general content. Brand photos are researched and planned out far in advance of your shoot, while leaving room for some of the candid moments and ideas that pop up mid-session (as they generally tend to!). Prior to your session, you will have a general idea of how long we’ll be shooting for so that you can plan and prepare for the day accordingly.

Do you offer mini sessions?

The short answer is no. The long answer is while there are so many talented photographers who absolutely nail the quick in-and-out service that comes with mini sessions, my personality and way of working are not conducive to blasting out a session at warp speed. One of my gifts is the ability to really get to know, understand and capture personalities through photography. Every session is completely different because my goal and my passion is to capture photos that authentically reflect the people in front of my lens. This is simply not possible for me to accomplish in the form of minis. In my experience, the BEST photos from your session are taken closer to the end after spending close to an hour with you and your family; not to mention, the majority of people are only starting to feel relaxed 30 minutes or more into a session! I want your session to be an experience and a fun memory in and of itself. If your heart is set on minis (which are a perfect choice for many circumstances!), I can help point you in the direction of some very talented photographers who excel in this medium!

Do you travel for sessions?

YES! I love visiting new-to-me places to do personal shoots and to capture the essence of places themselves through travel photography. It’s a dream come true for me every time. Travel and/or lodging fees are not included in the session fee and can be worked out on a case by case basis.

what if my kid isn’t overly cooperative?

I always tell my clients with young families that it’s best to let go of any expectations for how your session is going to go. Anyone who has tried to wrangle a child who absolutely does not want to pose for photos understands that you’re only going to end up with photos that in no way reflect the heart-melting version of your child that you know and love so dearly. I can confidently say that every single family session has countless beautiful moments - even the ones where kids are upset for a portion (or all) of it. I encourage you to keep your heart open and light, and to remember that the photos that we create together will be a celebration of the current season of life your family is in. Pivoting is the name of the game when it comes to family photos!

what should i wear?

I have outfit guides and Pinterest boards available for both family and personal brand sessions that will give you a ton of ideas if you’re feeling stuck. I’m happy to send them to you for ideas for our shoot together! My best advice, however, is to wear what you feel confident in without feeling like you have to dress a certain way (ahem…according to the make-believe Pinterest and Instagram “rules”). If that feels a bit too vague and unhelpful, the most visually appealing photos, whether for families or across a series of outfit changes for personal brand photos, involve complimentary colours and styles without getting super matchy. Something you may also want to keep in mind is choosing outfits that fit the vibe and the tones of the the setting where your photos will be taken. You can always send me a photo of what you’re thinking of if you are unsure and I will give you my honest opinion.

Do you shoot weddings?

Sadly, no. Long story short - my current health situation doesn’t allow for me to commit to something as important and once-in-a-lifetime as a wedding date. I very rarely have to move sessions around because of my health these days (I actually can’t even remember the last time that I had to, Covid restrictions and safety protocols aside) because I’ve learned to be honest with myself and my clients about what I can take on. But I simply don’t want to ever put someone (or myself!) into a position where they are scrambling for a replacement photographer for a day that’s already stressful enough! If you need recommendations for a wedding photographer, check out these super talented photographers in the GTA and surrounding areas: Selina Whittaker, Michelle Quance, Annabis Photography, Sara Monika, Pure + Lovely, Erin Caitlin and Nautical Studios.
